The Los Angeles County Office of Education’s Center for Distance and Online Learning (CDOL) has created a sustainable training and support model to deliver suicide prevention and student resiliency content to teachers, school administrators, schoolbased mental health support staff.

This will be accomplished through in-house school district trainers that are backed by multiple supports and resources from LACOE. This capacitybuilding project supports schools and agencies in aligning local services and plans to the California Statewide MultiTiered System of Supports (MTSS) efforts as well as new requirements to develop their policies in conjunction with suicide prevention experts, school and community stakeholders, and school mental health professionals related to AB2246.

The work will also support those districts, schools and other organizations that are implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as a process that is consistent with the core principles of MTSS.

This capacity building project will allow school districts access to high quality professional development in an online format while they receive both technical and content support.

Trainers will be coached and assisted through the initial implementation of their suicide prevention and MTSS plan, including development of a safe environment, resiliency, mental health services and addressing the multiple social emotional learning needs of students.

Each school district, charter and private school communities will have the opportunity to receive the following:

  • Professional development to create in-house district trainers. The trainers will become knowledgeable in student mental health issues and able to deliver targeted professional development to multiple audiences using CDOL created technology and web resources.
  • Access to suicide prevention online resources including complete presentation materials for different audiences that meet AB2246 required elements.
  • Web Virtual followup meetings and online learning community support including sharing among trainers and teachers.
  • Technology, content and implementation support services.
